where did her body go? drag the river, find it up on the shore soaked in UV rays where did her looks go? lost somewhere between 30 and 44 and withered with age oh we've all got a whole lot of growing up to do so many men don't love their wives for the beautiful things they do just for the fast, little fuck all of them once knew he knew her when she played a banjo in an old-time American music band but he loved her best when she gave her body to him in a 15-passenger van outside of a honky tonk Texas romance oh we've all got a whole lot of growing up to do so many men don't love their wives for the beautiful things they do just for the fast, little fuck all of them once knew pack fast, don't look back, he's passed out and won't be up til the morning light gas up, hit the overpass, don't stop till you've reached the 7th town and found a man who can finally treat you right.

there's something i wanna say i hope you don't take it the wrong way i wouldn't wanna make nobody feel blue but i'm taking a trip to the bottom of the Pontchartrain where the dirt on the banks turns to mud when it rains because the winters here are eyesores or so i'm told and my own true love's heart has grown ice cold.

we'll spray paint our names on the side of a train before it travels the whole wide world o'er and from north to south, inside and out they'll all know who we're made for we'll drive around town in the nighttime drive out passed the country in the day and in fields of wheat, your arms around me in the golden grass we will lay we'll spray paint our names on the side of a train before it travels the whole wide world o'er and from north to south, inside and out they'll all know who we're made for they'll all know who we're living for they'll all know who we're dying for.

the first time i saw the devil he was just up the road making deals for souls surprisingly in good health except a few burns from eternities in hell says it gives him a story to tell i could see he had his eyes on me a young kid who was scrappy as could be at the tender age of 19 mr. fire-in-your-eyes i've got a sick strain, 2 guns and past full of sin and lies devil: "i think i've seen your type a time or two born to run, ain't got shit else to lose except for maybe those blues" now it's such a long walk home i shook the devil's hands and he left me all alone said i won't need a friend where i'm going so i went back to the daily grind waited for the deal to show some life turns out the devil is just a man who likes to tell a few lies

Friend Ship 03:18
there's ships headed places all the time and i'll build one for these friends of mine and we will sail the sea, and you won't see me until the end of time but if i don't change, then i'll probably stay the same and if you ain't on board then you ain't a friend of mine and i'll keep a good woman by my side i'm talking one who can really treat me right and her heart won't pound loud but it will keep good time and i will dance to that beat my whole life she'll leave me one day "i lost the best girl," i'll say but if you ain't on board then you ain't a friend of mine and we'll dock up on some foreign land make new friends and shake their foreign hands and we'll stay up all night till the horizon gets light, leave the next day and never see them again but the stories they told we'll carry with us till we're old but if you're not on board then you ain't a friend of mine and we'll steal what we need to get us by not from the good folks, the ones who don't live it right and it'll teach them about what you have to go without before you really know what you want from this life i myself ain't a saint but i've been good enough to say, "if you ain't on board then you ain't a friend of mine."

We As Ghosts 03:42
i can remember lights i can remember all the times that you told it through the one that goes like "it was we as ghosts outside and no one knew or cared about what's on the other's mind" we've been poor before i remember bus rides coming down and i swear that you swore that "this ain't a way to live but it's something i'm proud of— being 24 and never found a run-around with love" oh love like gold don't you ever say you were born to because the more i think the more i'm less like you there ain't nothing like a tank on "E" in the rust belt with nothing for miles away so we'll lay out under the night with the look inside our eyes of not enough sleep or too much trying to sleep it away oh love like gold don't you ever say you were born to because the more i think the more i'm less like you

she's got pennies on her eyes not nickels tonight because she could not open them up wide i could love you do death all my life but here is not where they come to die it's where they go to get recognized we are not here for your good we just wanted to show up and leave just like you never thought we would you've got the number get to a payphone and dial it out on the other end will be Jesus and you'll finally have a chance to tell him all about about how it has not rained for weeks and your children's mouths are hungry and on account on that your marriage is getting weak and he'll tell you everything is bound to be OK just like he did after that hurricane, the big wave, oil, and the planes we are not here for your good we just wanted to show up and leave just like you never thought we would when i die i'll give you my teeth i'll give you all of my teeth for free because when i die honey i am gonna need yea i am gonna need someone who can bite my tongue for me you've got the number get to a payphone and dial it out on the other end will be Jesus and you'll finally have a chance to tell him all about.

South Koree 03:53
you can call it a change call it what you will just don't call it strange my elbows on the sill i sat and looked out lonesome for handsome still then i thought about you till i forgot about you now i'm thinking of you and your shiny red shoes and how you can slide them on and walk across that ocean blue because all my time is spent on the west now and all my time is spent on the west now i was all strung out with a map at my feet i was fixing to make a big move to South Koree i bought a motorbike with a sidecar for my bride-to-be then i lost half of what i own in an ugly game of cards i won half of that back now a quarter of it's ours for such a skinny thing she can sure hold a lot inside her arms because all my time is spent on the west now and all my time is spent on the west now there's a lonely bird outside the window he don't sing but he talks to much and it sounds like weeping Sarah's not sleeping and it's probably keeping her up so we'll shout all night that we're free and we'll shout it loud, "we are in love!" because as a friend once sang, "when you're young and you're free you can live however you want" because all my time is spent on the west now and all my time is spent on the west now because all my time is spent thinking of weddings now and all my time is spent on the west now.

West 03:48
i went out drunk as hell on friday in my mouth the taste of shitty beer and cheap drinks she said, "you don't ever wanna grow up, do you now? you're in no rush and you don't even sing it like you used to now oh, boy, i thought you swore you'd never change" Jen went west with a scarf on her breast to keep the cold out she'd lived too long in the north forgot to bring her raincoat out and she romanticized what it would be like to move all around then with a sad pen wrote home: "every place looks like the next town oh, boy, sometimes i swear they never change."
